FAQs

Does Helmsley accept unsolicited requests?No, we do not accept unsolicited grant requests.

What is a Letter of Inquiry (“LOI”)?A Letter of Inquiry (“LOI”) serves as the first step in the application process before requesting a full proposal from a prospective grantee.

Where can I access a Letter of Inquiry (“LOI”)? After prospective grantees are invited by Program Staff, The Grants Management Department will contact prospective grantees via email with instructions to the online LOI. In the event of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), the instructions will be made available via Helmsley’s website. All LOIs must be submitted electronically.

Where can I access grant applications? Helmsley does not accept unsolicited grant applications except in the case of Requests for Proposals (“RFPs”). Prospective grantees will be provided access to Helmsley’s grant application upon invitation from Helmsley. All applications must be submitted electronically.

Does Helmsley issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs)? Should Helmsley elect to issue Requests for Proposals (RFPs), this will be announced on Helmsley’s website (helmsleytrust.org) and other media outlets as appropriate.

Does Helmsley only fund organizations that have 501(c)(3) status?Helmsley generally funds public charities classified under Section 501(c)(3). Under the 501(c)(3) status, Helmsley awards grants to 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) organizations. Helmsley does not typically fund 509(a)(3), type iii supporting organizations. Helmsley also funds internationally-based organizations without 501(c)(3) status that are found to be equivalent to US-based public charities, and charitable projects at for-profit organizations. If your organization has a 509(a)(3) classification or any relevant tax status questions, please contact Grants Management at grants@helmsleytrust.org or your program staff contact.

Can I get a template in advance of my application?Helmsley does not issue advance copies of applications. You should be given an adequate amount of time to complete your application. If you need to adjust your application timeline, please contact the program staff who invited your application.

Communications

How should I promote my Helmsley-funded work? Helmsley seeks to support grantees’ efforts by promoting Helmsley-funded work and building greater visibility for the important work you do. Please note that Helmsley must receive a signed Grant Agreement from the grantee prior to the distribution of a press release or any other public statements pertaining to Helmsley, and all communications materials must be reviewed by Helmsley. Please direct all communications queries and materials for review to Communications Officer Laura Fahey (lfahey@helmsleytrust.org, 212-953-2814). 

How do I use the Helmsley name? The official name is The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust (note the “T” in “The” is capitalized in the official name). The official name must be used in this exact form as the first reference to Helmsley within the main text of any press releases or public documents that mention Helmsley. You may use either “the Helmsley Charitable Trust” or simply “Helmsley” in all subsequent references beyond the initial reference to the official name. Any headline may refer to Helmsley as the "Helmsley Charitable Trust."

How can Helmsley help communicate my work? We welcome any content that may help us communicate our grantees’ work to a larger audience. Helmsley frequently promotes grantees’ work both on our website and on Twitter, @HelmsleyTrust. Written content that showcases your work, such as stories, press coverage, or publications, as well as photographs or videos, is helpful in Helmsley’s communications efforts. Accessing the Helmsley Grants Portal 

How do I access my application?Helmsley uses online applications to ensure timely receipt of submissions. All applicants will receive an email from Helmsley containing a link to access the application. Applications are password-protected, so once you create a log-in, please enter the password provided in the e-mail you received.

What browser works best with the grant application interface?The preferred browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome.

Can our organization have multiple people access a grant application? Unfortunately, due to the constraints of the online portal, only one log-in can be assigned to each application at a time. Most of our grantees share log-in information (shared username/password). An alternative option is to transfer ownership of the application to another person so that this individual can enter grant information.
